Title : Effect of monthly planting on cane quality and yield.

Author : B. S. Srinivasmurthy and P.G. Satpute.

Year : 1993-94

This experiment was laid down to assess the quality and yield performance of three sugarcane varieties namely, CoC 671, Co 8014 and Co 740 in the month of May (Fag-end of the crushing season). These varieties are planted from February 1993 to July 1993 and harvested in the month of May 1994 (i.e the crop age for all three varieties varied from 10 to 15 months). The details of the pol percent and yield (M.T per ha) obtained are as described below:-

(a) Pol percent

With regards to pol % it is CoC 671 recorded highest when it was planted in the month of March (14th months) giving 20.71 % pol when compared to Co 8014 and Co 740 which gave 20.18 and 18.07 % respectively during the same month of planting. It was observed that there was higher reduction of pol percent when planting of all these varieties done from April till July. This may be attributed to the crop age factor. However in general February and March planted cane and harvested in the month of May has shown better pol % irrespective of varietal factor except Co 740 which recorded drastically lower pol values when planted in the month of March (18.07%).

(b) Yield (M.T ha-1)

Yield obtained for this experiments for all these three varieties is not consistance. This is due to problems like early shoot borer, higher temperature at the time of germination and tillering phases. Hence there is lower number of millable canes which led down to the variation in the yield levels. The pol and yield data is enclosed as in Table No. 3. This experiment is again repeated for the current season with utmost care about early shoot borers.
