The local
practice is to go for intercropping of maize with sugarcane, both being exhavstive crops
they compete for nutrients and light. Maize has a rapid growth rate and smothers the
sugarcane crop which has show growth rate for the first 3 months of planting. The
experiment was taken with a viewk to know the effect of maize intercropping on sugarcane
growth, yield and juice quality. Two varieties CoC 671 and Co 740 were grown with and
without maize as intercrop. The treatments were replicated 5 times under randamosed
design. The data on yield and quality parameters were recorded and are given in Table 10
and 11.

TABLE -
11. EFFECT OF MAIZE INTERCROPPING ON YIELD PARAMETERS LIKE MILLABLE CANES PER HECTARE,
NUMBER OF INTERNODES PER STALK MILLABLE CANE LENGTH, STALK DIAMETER AND YIELD AND QUALITY
PARAMETERS LIKE BRIX, POL AND PURITY OF SUGARCANE VARIETIES.
The
experimental results showed that the pol percent juice decreased by 3 to 4 units due to
maize intercropping in both the varieties CoC 671 and Co 740. This may be attributed to
more number of immature canes at harvest due to late tillers emergence at harvest. There
was a significant decrease in yield parameter like millable cane length and cane diameter
due to intercropping of maize. Intercropping decreased the cane yield by 40 to 50 M.T per
hectare. The yield of maize was 28-30 quintals per hectare even with the additional income
of Rs.6,000/- per hectare from maize crop, cultivator still bear loss of Rs.6,000/- to
Rs.9,000/- per hectare on account of lower cane yield. The loss to the factory is to the
extent of nearly 2 per cent on recovery by crushing cane intercropped with maize.
