Selection of
varieties for their good quality and high yield was continued. A set of 18 varieties were
tested, along with two local popular varieties Co 740 and Co 419. The Sugarcane Varieties,
design, fertilization etc. are summerised below.

The experimental data in respect of juice quality at increasing crop ages
of 9, 11 and 13 months and yield components and yield are presented in Table 1 and 2. |
TABLE - 1. SUGARCANE VARIETAL TRIAL
MID-LATE VARIETIES JUICE QUALITY AT INCREASING CROP AGE.
TABLE - 2. SUGARCANE VARIETAL TRIAL
MID-LATE YIELD PARAMETERS.
Data on juice quality
at 9 months crop age indicated that varieties Co 8147, Co 8220, Co 8014, Co 8213, Co 8221,
Co 7805, Co 8022, Co 8115, Co 7914 and Co 8011 gave higher pol percent juice than local
standard Co 740.
At 11 months of
crop age all the varieties tested, except Co 7804 and Co 7808 gave higher pol percent than
standard Co 740.
At harvest (13
months of crop age) variety Co 7805 gave the highest pol percent of 20.75 followed by Co
8220, Co 8011, Co 7914, Co 7808, Co 8127, Co 8123, Co 8115 and local standard Co 419. All
the varieties tested, except Co 6304, Co 7804, Co 8014 and CoSi 86071 gave higher pol
percent than local standard Co 740. Variety Co 8011 recorded higher caneyield of 108.5
tonnes per hectare followed by Co 8022, Co 8014, Co 7804, Co 7805, Co 8220, Co 8221, Co
6304, Co 8024, Co 8213 and Co 8127l. Other varieties tested gave lower yield compared to
Co 740. Variety Co 8011 gave the highest sugar yield of 15.36 tonnes per hectare at 13
months followed by Co 7805, Co 8022, Co 8014 and Co 8220. All other varieties
tested gave sugar yield below 12 tonnes per hectare.
