Title : Optimisation of Space Requirement for High Tillering Variety.

Author : R.Narasimhan and G.S.C. Rao.

Year : 1981

Under this programme spacing trial was conducted with Co 997 with 5 inter row spacing (30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 cms) in randomised block design. The height at 8 months flowering and juice quality at 12 months age were collected and presented in Table 8:1. The yield and millable cane data observed at final harvest are appended in Table 8:2, 8:3. Although the yield differences were not statistically significant among the spacings, millalble cane number per hactare was significantly higher in 45, 60 cm spacings as compared to 30 cm spacing. The millable cane number were significantly lower in 75 and 90 cm spacing as compared 45, 60 cm spacing due to decrease in number of plants per hactare. The results suggested high tillering genotypes like Co 997 require inter plant spacings if 45 and 60 cms.

R.C.P. 06. Co 62175 Mill Test.

Big mill trial of Co 62175 was conducted on 2nd December 1981 to evaluate the commercial performance of this variety during main season. Mill trial results were compared to that day's commercial cane quality characteristics. Despite pol% bagasse being high, the expected recovery of Co 62175 was 11.04 as compared to 10.55 which was higher than that day's recovery (Tables 9:1 and 9:2). Fibre % cane was 1.56 units lower than that of the control. The mill trial results suggested that Co 62175 in addition to high yielding, is superior in quality at 12 months.
