Preliminary varietal trial with 38 varieties and two checks was planted on 3rd February 1981 with 3 replications in Randomized Block Design. The varieties included in the trial were Co 8101, Co 8102, Co 8103, Co 8104, Co 8105, Co 8106, Co 8107, Co 8108, Co 8109, Co 8110, Co 8111, Co 8112, Co 8113, Co 8114, Co 8116, Co 8117, Co 8118, Co 8119, Co 8120, Co 8121, Co 8122, Co 8123, Co 8124, Co 8125, Co 7901, Co 7902, Co 7903, Co 7904, Co 7905, Co 7906, Co 7908, Co 7910, Co 7911, Co 7912, Co 7913, Co 7914, Co 7915, Co 7916, data recorded on Germination percent at 30 days after planting, cane height and girth at 9 months, are appended in Table 1:1. At 9 and 12 months age quality analysis were carried out. (Table 1:2, 1:3). The trial was harvested on 28th February 1982 and data on yield, millalble canes were recorded (Table 1.4). Out of the Total, seven varieties, viz. Co 8001, Co 8010, Co 8011, Co 8014, Co 8020, Co 8021, Co 7912, Co 7914,Co 7915, were promoted to second stage clonal trial. Due to failure of germination and also due to water logging, crop stand was poor in 9 varieties (Co 8002, Co 8006, Co 8024, Co 8022, Co 8012, Co 8021, Co 7912, Co 7914, Co 7915). Hence they were again included in 1st stage clonal trial.
