Title  : Use of Sugarcane Bagasse to Check Leaching Losses of Urea

Author : R.Narasimhan,R .S.Sachan,G.S.C.Rao and A.T. Yaragattikar

Year : 1980

With increasing costs of inorganic fertilizers the "Nitrogen use Efficiency for Cane Crops" need to be increased. In light soils of this area, the leaching losses of urea is of general experience. This can be partly over come by fixing up nitrogen by cellulosic material which would also hlep in better C/N ratio. Keeping this in view, the by product of sugar industry, cane bagasse was tried as cellulose source. The experiment was conducted with Co 740 variety from June 1980, following were the treatments.

The bagasse and urea mix was maintained in 7:1 ratio. Observations - Millable canes, height per cane, juice quality at 9th and 10th months are presented in Table 9. Further data is awaited. Bagasse at lower doses of Nitrogen appears to be deliterious but at higher doses (N.150) was found to be beneficial.
