Title : Growth Analysis during Juvenile Stages of Sugarcane Growth

In order to findout the patterns of dry matter production and its partitioning, a time course study was carriedout with two early varieties Co 6415 and Co 997. The experiment was initiated on 30th July 1979 and at every week growth analysis were done for whole plant. After 10th occassion the duration of sampling was extended to two weeks. Results represented in Table 6. Showed variations in total dry matter and partitioning in two genotypes grown under same environment and crop management. Co 6415 observed to produce more dry matter per m-2 land than Co 997. Partitioning of total photosynthate was calculated on organic carbon basis.

It can be seed from Table - 7:1, 7:2 that:

  1. Ratio of storage organic carbon dry matter to structural organic carbon dry matter was found to be 0.9 to 1.0 in shoot and 1.5 to 2.0 in stalk.

  2. When stalk dry matter taken as storage, the ratio was around 1.0 till 10th occassion and after that partitioning favoured the storage dry matter.

  3. On whole plant basis the partition of dry matter was exactly 50:50 between storage and structural.

All the above results suggest that the total dry matter produced by cane plant, there is a definite partitioning into storage and structural right from juvenile stages.

Further studies are essential to understand the more complex behaviour of partitioning.
