Seeds of
varieties of sugar beet were supplied by the Project Co-ordinator (Sugar beet), G.B. Pant
Agricultural University, Pantnagar, for evaluation of varietal performance under North
Karnataka conditions. These were sown in field No. E-2/72 on 6th Nov. 76. Data collected
are summerised in Table VII.
Table VII.
Experiment Sugar Beet Varietal Evaluation.
2. Spacing : a)
Plant to plant 20 cm
5. Plot size : 5
M x 1.5 M = 7.5 sp. M.
6. Date of
planting : 6th November 1976.
7. Date of
harvesting : 29th March 1977.
8. Fertilizer
application : 120 Kg/ha N. 80 Kg. K2 0/ha, 60 Kg. P2 O5/ha.
Varieties Nos. 124 and
272 germinated satisfactorily. The stand in other cases was gappy, probably due to delayed
planting. Incidence of out worm was observed but the pest was controlled by spraying
Malathion before much damage was done. Damage due to cercospora was observed in varieties
Nos. 189 and 269. The only fungicide available on hand at the time was Blitox. This was
sprayed on the affected crops and the attack was contained. The vigour of the plants in
all cases was good and specially so in varieties Nos. 124 and 272. Roots were analysed at
120 days, 135 days and 150 days of age. Results of analysis are also given in Table VII.
The experiment was terminated on 29th March 77. The crop was harvested and sent to the
factory to be crushed along with cane.
