The preliminary varietal trial of 1976 was harvested on 30th March 1977. The data recorded are given in Table I. Nine varieties Co 7302, Co 7303, Co 7306, Co 7309, Co 7217, Co 7318, Co 7330, Co 7331 and Co 7333 which appear likely to do well in this region were promoted for inclusion in the pre final trial of 1977-78.

b) The following 21 varieties were planted in field No. C-3/72 in 13th January 1977 for preliminary observation. Co 678, Co 7313, Co 7426, Co 7427, Co 7430, Co 7503, Co 7506, Co 7508, Co 7509, Co 7527, Co 7534, Co 7602, Co 7605, Co 7606, Co 7609, Co 7611, Co 7630, Co 7631, Co 7635 and Co 7638. Co 7508, Co 7527, Co 2602, Co 7605, Co 7606, Co 7609, Co 7611 and Co 7632 germinated extremely well and Co 7313, Co 7508, Co 7527, Co 7602, Co 7605 and Co 7632 showed remarkable early vigour.
