The trial was
taken up to find out the possibilities of reducing the cost of preparatory cultivation in
sugarcane where maize is taken as a mixed crop. During 1973 the experiment was laid out in
the field with lighter soils A country plow was run once at the bottom of the furrow after
the harvest of maize, and sugarcane was planted in the furrows. The treatment was compared
with the conventional practice of ploughing and harrowing the field, making ridgesk and
furrows and then regular planting. It was found that reduced preparatory tillage did not
in any way result in the reduction of yield of cane. The ratoon crop of cane was harvested
on 30-11-1975 which did not show any reduction in yield. Refer to Table No. 14 for data
collected on the yield of cane and number of millable canes at harvest in the two
treatments.
