Field testing of sugarcane varieties. Field testing of sugarcane varieties brought from different research institutes in the country such as (i) Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore (ii) Regional Research Station V.C. Farm Mandya and (iii) Sugarcane Research Station, Padegaon, under agro climatic conditions of Bijapur district forms one of the Chief research programmes of the Institute. The field testing is done under three categories (a) Final varietal trials (b) Prefinal varietal trials and (c) Preliminary varietal trials. In the category of trials under (a), (b) and (c) varietal characters such as germination %, number of shoots at 4 months age, number millable canes per hectare at harvest, plant population, juice analysis, yield per hect. and lodging or non-lodging are studied. In other trials, seed material is only multiplied for further detail experimentation.

Final varietal trials: Varieties selected were 1) Co 7102 2) Co 7202 3) Co 7204 4) Co 7219 and 5) Co 7220.
