  White wooly aphid is serious pest on Sugarcane crop. It was first appeared in Karnataka on August 2002. It has widely spread throughout the Karnataka within very short period and it is reported that about 26% yield reduction were recorded after heavy infestation of this pest. Its control through chemicals is very difficult despites causing heavy environmental hazards as it sucks sap from lower surface of the leaves .Considering these demerits and also its feeding habit and physical nature it was felt that biological method is the most suitable means to keep the incidence of this pest at minimum level.

  Necessary of predator laboratory at Dhavaleshwar (Gokak Taluka)
  Godavari Biorefineries Ltd. Sameerwadi surrounding area is a prominent Sugarcane producing belt. White wooly aphid pest threatened farmers of this region. They were under urgent need of pest control by any means of heavy chemical doses. Then predator viz. Micromus igoratus on white wooly aphid was identified. After observing the details predator pertuation ,feeding habit and survivability it was considered establish predator rearing laboratory at village.This will enable the farmers to release the predoatros more effectively in the affected fields .Hence in collaboration with U.A.S., Dharwad predator production lab was started in September 2005.

  Functioning of Predatory laboratory;
  Micromus is a monophagus predator on white wooly aphid and it is reared in lab by using white wooly aphid as food material. Micromus predator passes through four stages mainly egg, grub, pupae and adults. Pupal stage of predator has most suitable and hence pupae are supplied to farmers for controlling sugarcane pest.

  Capacity of the unit
  Our predator lab is about 2000 pupae /day. These pupae are supplied to farmers by demonstrating them regarding release and 400 pupae per acre are recommended and will be able to control the pest of Sugarcane crop completely in about 25-30 days. Predator pupae is supplied on first cum first serve basis at free of cost.
