Power from renewable sources

Bagasse based Co-generation is perceived as the most exciting opportunity for addition of significant power generation capacity based on non-conventional energy source. Several studies carried out have established that significant potential exists in India for Bagasse Based Co-generation. About 3000 MW of power can be generated from all the sugar plants in India. Further, the interest shown by the Government of India, the State Government’s and International funding agencies have provided the necessary thrust to encourage sugar mills to become more and more conscious for energy conservation and venture into the area of high efficiency co-generation leading to export of surplus power to the State Electricity Board grid. Thus, Indian Sugar Industry is on the threshold of making a visible penetration in power generation sector.

Our Sugar factory, The Godavari Sugar Mills Ltd., Sameerwadi, is situated in Northern Karnataka in an area having very high cane potential and lies in the strategic cane belt of Southern Maharashtra and Belgaum District of Karnataka. The unit has advantage of having not only a substantial large cane crushing capacity but also high cane potential area to meet the requirements of co-generation for continuous operation throughout the year.

The company has planned a cogeneration plant in 3 phases.  The first phase of 24MW has already been implemented.  Currently, the company is planning to implement the second phase of the project.  With the completion of this phase, the company will have a power generating capacity of 41 MW.
